Based on a drawing by Jean-François Millet
"The man with the spade is a motif common to the art of Millet after the artist settled in Barbizon in 1848. Many versions of this particular theme of peasant life appear in Millet's drawing and prints, culminating in "L'homme à la houe", a major painting of c. 1860. Such images reflect Millet's romantic interest in the life of the peasant as he turned in the late 1840s from his earlier representation of religious and classical themes." W.H.
