This print of a woman by Robert Austin depicts an older, working class figure, as shown by her style of dress that indicates a lower status than women normally represented in portraiture. The female sitter does not look directly at the viewer, but instead her head is turned slightly to the left. While traditional portraits of women depict the sitter staring straight at the viewer, in Alice Lush, Austin rejects this trend and crafts a portrait that departs from a conventional representation. Austin depicts this woman as he sees her, holding a true representation of her societal status rather than idealizing her as an object of beauty.
