Lauterbrunnen is a village near Bern in Switzerland. In Western European culture, mountains were considered threatening, and their purpose on earth even debated in religious and literary circles as to whether they were part of God’s original creation. This feeling changed later in the 18th century, when mountains became a symbol of the Sublime. (Isabelle Chartier, "Shifting Ground", Fall 2017)
