Hankey expertly uses the technique of etching to portray the difficult life of the European lower class. The grunginess that is a natural part of the technique of etching is able to convey the taxing every-day life of a lower member of society. This anonymous female sitter looks away and down from the viewer, conveying a sense of weariness and exhaustion, which is consistent with the dull, monotone color scheme of the piece. The lack of a distinctive background allows the viewer to focus completely on the character of the sitter. Through the work, the viewer is invited to participate in the desperation and exhaustion experienced by this lower-class member of society during the early 1900s.
