The intricate shadows on the sitter's face demonstrate the ability of the medium to display fine details. The use of light highlighting the figure's left side combined with the man's demeaned expression emphasize his age. The subject's medieval dress and exaggerated age draw from the tradition of portraiture, bringing to mind the caricatures and portrait studies of past Renaissance greats. Being unnamed, the identity of the figure is in question as is the work's classification as a portrait.
