Irene by H.M. Harvey depicts a young girl twirling her hair and staring back through the picture plane. This young girl is seated in a three-quarter pose as she looks out at the viewer while grabbing her hair with her left hand. She is wearing a plain white shirt, with a simple braid long braid. Irene's straightforward presentation leaves her identity completely unknown as she has few unique characteristics to give clues about her individuality. Yet she projects a compelling presence to the viewer through her direct gaze and unexpected pose while she braids her thick hair, perhaps a morning ritual with which she begins each day.
This etching was "pulled" 50 different times; this particular one was made early (14/50) in the printing process, resulting in crisp, delicate lines and subtly even ink application.
