An example of early figure drawing, this relief apparently represents the Sun god giving his blessing to the world. The artist was concerned primarily with conveying the idea of the Sun rather than giving a realistic treatment to the Sun. The border suggests that this is a complete composition in itself, though one in which perspective and spatial relations are freely manipulated to emphasize the idea. Twisting and spiraling arrow motifs, which may represent sea and land, give the whole relief a vitality essential to the theme. Earthly creatures are depicted as well, much smaller than the Sun, in order to clarify the importance of the Sun in both the composition and in the lives of the people who created this sculpture.
