Emil Foerster’s small view of East Liberty reveals the enormous changes the Pittsburgh neighborhood has witnessed in the past hundred and fifty years. What may look to us like a small rural community was in the 1870s on its way to becoming a thriving neighborhood and commercial center. Looking to your left at Hetzel’s Panther Creek, notice the different ways Pittsburgh artists portrayed changing relationships between man, industry, and nature in the growing region.
