Exhibition LabelContrasting brilliant light and black shadows give this woodcut a surreal atmosphere, heightened by the ambiguity of the figures. The Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus are easily recognizable, but the three middle figures may be shepherds or the wise men; Joseph is probably the background figure. The artist's use of highly angular cuts in nearly all the figures gives a further mystical quality to the woodcut. Murphy's use of crowded space serves to empower the radiance effecting from the holy child, but the primary vision is never lost to his space.
