There are seven alternate versions of this composition in a variety of media created by Gleizes and listed in the Catalogue Raisonee that use the same coloring and approximate the same composition. Though this Gouache is not titled, alternate versions are titled "Composition ou Femme et Enfant" or "Maternite ou Vierge a l'Enfant" or "Femme et Enfant." The semi-abstracted gouache represents a mother and child. During the 1920s, Gleizes created several different compositions in different media that addressed this theme. During this time Albert Gleizes was drawn to the study of pre-Renaissance art (including Romanesque, Gothic, Byzantine and Arabic art). In 1927 Gleizes established the artistic, agricultural and intellectual commune of Moly-Sabata in Sablons, across the river from Serrières. (From Oxford Art Online)
