Head and bust of nude model with brown hair, bright light and shadow, against red background.
Malcom Stevens Parcell was an accomplished portrait artist, but this work is not traditionally considered among his most noted works. Unlike other nudes done by the local artist, this portrait was painted much earlier.
This woman is depicted from the chest up, smiling and in a decidedly active pose. Her pose and nudity suggest that she was comfortable and friendly with the artist. But what would have driven her to pose naked? Although she is not named in the title, we know that she was the mother of a prominent local political figure. What could her relationship with the artist have been to make her so comfortable posing in the nude? What does her willingness to pose nude tell us about her personality or social status?
