Although this work is unsigned, it appears to be a study for or a "souvenir" sketch after a detail of the larger version of this artist's major painting in the Detroit Institute of Arts.  Sometimes Diaz made small sketches of a work for the Salons in Paris, since collectors often asked him for "souvenirs" of his larger Salon works.
