Modern/Contemporary
This work shows a more painterly approach than Millet's vigorous and rougher studies, and appears more sentimental in its bucolic perfection. At the same time, the artist has used several techniques that show an individualistic attitude and the influence of new ideas about French art. The perspective is novel, as the shepherdess and her flock are turned away from the viewer while she stares dreamily toward a village outlined faintly in the distance. The bare tree in the center of the drawing is not romanticized or used as a theatrical backdrop. This drawing displays the artist's affectionate familiarity with rustic life and nature.
