Potosí depicts two indigenous figures in an embrace, which the artist intended as a symbol of solidarity and brotherhood. Potosí was raised and continues to work in San Antonio de Ibarra in Ecuador, a town known for its rich tradition of woodcarving.
A brass plaque affixed to the upper left of surface states that this work was gifted to the University of Pittsburgh in 1968 in recognition of the completion of Proyecto Ecuador (Project Ecuador), an international exchange program between Pitt and universities in Quito.
