Matilda Hudson Smith (1837–1909) and her sister Jane McGrew Smith were philanthropists and life-long residents of Allegheny City, now Pittsburgh’s North Side. Their maternal grandfather co-founded the first fire insurance company in Western Pennsylvania. They were generous supporters of the Western University of Pennsylvania (later the University of Pittsburgh), which relocated from Pittsburgh to Allegheny City in 1882, returning to Pittsburgh in 1909. They established the Smith Geological Collection at the University in 1888, and in 1900 provided funds for equipment, marble flooring, and the art glass window created by Mary E. Tillinghast in the Allegheny Observatory.
