This print comes from the series of Famous Views of Edo.
Edo (now Tokyo), Hiroshige's native town, was not only the center of his own artistic activities, but that of the color print industry. Edo was the seat of the effective government and therefore the center of national life. Hiroshige depicted Edo and its neighborhoods in his series "Famous Views of Edo" under every conceivable condition-lonely, deserted scenes, crowded streets; river festivals; temples; and under various weather conditions, as in the Snow Scene. Hiroshige most likely chose to represent these scenes in order to please mid-nineteenth century urbanites who bought the prints and thus supported the print industry.
