Even though this print is abstract in subject matter, Maki is sufficiently old-fashioned to sign his prints in characters and use an old-style seal in red, carefully placed, as if on a traditional Japanese painting. His prints make use of very thick paper, embossed by the use of a cement mould. The cement on which the designs are inscribed can be worked deeply and precisely, creating prints that achieve an astonishing tactile quality very different from those embossed through other processes. Maki studied at the Modern Print Research Society, where he was a pupil of the master Onchi Koshiro. Onchi was the leader of the Sosaku Hanga (the 20th-century print movement). Maki, like most of Onchi's pupils, has shown considerable independence of mind.
