The relationship between the dragon and the fish is a popular mythic motif in Chinese art. The dragon is said to have tremendous powers of transformation whrereby it can assume the shape of anythign it desires. According to legend, when the carp succeeded on passing upstream against the current, it magically became a gragon. This is one account of the birth of the dragon. Shown here is the dragon drawing a carp from water. (Charlotte McKown)
