Chinese
Made of bowenite from Xiuyan county, Liaoning province, in the northeast of China. Semi-transluscent with brown and black dots, it is usually called "Xiuyan jade". Compared to nephrite, it is more transluscent and has more stains. Since it is mined in large amount, it is considered less valuable than nephrite. It is often used in modern jade carving. The light yellowish green color is common from the Xiuyan jade. The artisan made use of the natural color of the surface of the jade to depict a bird. This technique is called qiao-se (ingenious use of color).
