Characteristic of Ma Shou-hua's style are the moist brushstrokes and simple composition of this bamboo painting. By contrasting light and dark ink, Ma Shou-hua has very simply indicated foreground and background space. Along with plum, orchid, pine and chrysanthemum, the bamboo is traditionally used as the subject of beginning literati painters (members of the educated class) so that they may learn the basic strokes required for painting. Bamboo is also a favorite subject of older literati for its similarity to calligraphy and symbolic representation of the scholar.
The artist, Ma Shou, hua, was a practicing lawyer and later a judge who painted in his spare time. Although he was never a full-time artist, he has achieved great fame in Republic of China for his paintings of landscapes, flowers and bamboo.
