An old fisherman experienced the late evening on a boat drifting amongst the green mountains and foggy atmosphere.

Scholar in a Small Boat
Signature of Zhang Daqian (1899-1983)
20th century
Ink and color on paper, Hanging scroll

Also featuring a signature of Zhang Daqian and executed in the manner of Shitao, this painting depicts a solitary figure in a small boat surrounded by cattails beneath a looming mountain. The inscription locates this scene in autumn at dusk as the man departs, being blown in the direction the wind takes him. Unlike Yanling Rapids, the viewer here is not guided through the landscape—is this because the scholar, gazing rightward, himself has no clear destination? This uncertainty recalls the circuitous path of Zhang Daqian’s own life. A modern literatus who lived all over the world, he made homes and art in many far off places.
