As the title suggests, this portrait of a balding man with a beard captures the viewer's attention with his soft and quizzical gaze. The distinctive grey beard and his receding hair mark this man clearly as an elderly person. The subtle lighting and coloring also bring a sense of gentle warmth and harmlessness. Perhaps this piece was a study done by the artist to find the correct facial features, shading, and lighting to properly portray an elderly man. When viewing this sketch the term portrait may be generalized to the portrayal of an elderly man rather than a specific person.
