Figure on Turtle in an Architectural Setting

Pen and brown ink over graphite on laid paper

7.125 in W x 10.75 in H (Image)
European
This drawing is on a handmade paper that contains a watermark depicting three mountains or trinity knot.
Bearing the inscription “originale di [...] da [...] nel Giardino del Duca Strozzi” in later hand.
This drawing recalls a famous fountain in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, depicting the dwarf jester Morgante on a turtle. Because the details of this drawing differ from this fountain’s design, and features a watermark used some 200 years after its completion, the drawing is probably a study for another later sculpture, as yet untraced.
Wall label from the exhibition The Curious Drawings of Doctor Clapp, UAG, October 24–December 6, 2019.
