This portrait of a woman's head captures the stereotypical submissive gaze of a woman. The downcast angle of her eyes indicates that the viewer has permission to look upon her without confrontation. Her jewelry, head accessory, and hairstyle hint that she is moderately conservative and may belong to the middle class. These personal attributes along with her distinct facial features suggest an actual sitter was used to create this sketch. The name of the sitter is left unknown and the work stands in an unfinished state but perhaps it was a portrait of and for a specific person. It may also have been a study based on a model to portray the characteristics of a slightly aging middle class woman. Can this be considered a "true" portrait even though it remains a sketch without the inclusion of the sitter's name?
