After Raphael, Fire in the Borgo, 1514.
Bears the inscription “Mantegna” and the inscription “Enea e anchise” in later hand.
These works are copied from famous frescoes by Raphael. On the left, the upper drawing depicts the Ancient Greek philosopher Parmenides, while the lower seated figure represents the Roman poet Horace. The work on the right copies a group of figures from The Fire in the Borgo.
The drawings all appear to be by the same artist, but their attribution to Andrea Mantegna cannot be correct. Mantegna died in 1506, before Raphael painted any of the works from which these are copied.
Wall label from the exhibition The Curious Drawings of Doctor Clapp, UAG, October 24–December 6, 2019.
