Attributed to the younger Van de Velde, Boats at Anchor does bear similarities to his most mature style of around 1700, when the old artist executed many small, subtle drawings in grey chalk and pen. The lines, especially notable in the hanging pennants, sweeping along the rails of the large boats, and indicating in pen the calm water's surface are flowing, somewhat decorative, and sure. There is a bold quality about them, too, in describing the heavy structural elements of the near vessels. An atmospheric effect has been achieved in the case of the boats near and on the horizon, which have become increasingly fainter with further distance.
