This drawing is on a handmade paper that contains a watermark depicting an anchor.
After Raphael, Fire in the Borgo, 1514.
Bears the inscription “Cav Guise D’Arpino” in later hand.
The watermark on the paper of this drawing is an anchor in a circle. This was a common design in the first half of the sixteenth century, but its use of a seven-pointed star––according to the database of Charles-Moïse Briquet––connects the paper to the city of Milan in 1570.
Wall label from the exhibition The Curious Drawings of Doctor Clapp, UAG, October 24–December 6, 2019.
