It is likely that this drawing was an anatomical reference for the artist, since the figure is in no identified space and is in a typical studio pose. A strong light illuminates nearly the whole model, allowing shadows to serve to outline the figure's left side and cast a defining shadow on the right side. The white highlights, especially visible on the right forearm, have been all but obliterated. It seems that the shading and highlights were used mostly to accent a soft chalk outline, which is rather boxlike in the heels and knees. Considering the strong light, there is not enough shadow on the right hand or the head, which is unfinished. Likewise, the left hand is cut off, apparently due to the artist's placement of the figure. Overall, a good sense of proportion is evident, though the figure is not shaded well enough to give the illusion of roundness.
