Possibly a sketch for a sculpture, this saint seems chopped callously out of rock himself, which may prefigure the artist's intent. Though it outlines an entire compositional idea in itself, it lacks the attention to detail that would classify it as a finished study. The long proportions of the legs further accent this point, as they indicate that the drawing was not done from life, but from his imagination or possibly from some even more rapid sketches by the artist.
