Giovanni Battista Foggini was an architect and sculptor in Florence. Although this page has been cut from a larger page, a complete drawing is represented, as the figure is depicted in whole. This drawing, however, is a study rather than a finished work, for the right hand, left forearm, and thighs are left incomplete. The knobby frame and flying hair of the figure suggest a live model set in the artist's studio, rather than a copy from another artist's work. Another clue here is the short, quick, overlapping strokes used to outline the musculature, a technique necessary to quickly record such a posture. The dramatic lighting suggests the form by rapidly drawn shadows and highlights. It is possible that this study was done in order to determine the lighting for such a figure in a project to be done by the artist.
