The use of bright colors and strong, assured brushstrokes are an important part of Chi's style, which is famous and widely copied. This painting serves as a excellent example of Chih Pai-shih's use of color. However, the large plum branch, painted with hesitation and a lack of assurance, may belie a forgery. Even inauthentic paintings may display the testimonial of a signature and seal, rendering the task of authentication virtually impossible. Because plum blossoms are at their most beautiful during the coldest and most harsh months of winter, the plum has come to symbolize scholarship and strength of character.
