Fufus H. Fitzgerald was Provost, then Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh between 1944-1955. During his tenure construction started on ten new buildings on the Oakland campus and Jonas Salk's team at the University's Virus Resarch Lab, with Julius Youngner as senior scientist, developed the polio vaccine that was declared in April 1955 to be "safe, effective, and potent".
