"Clashing light and dark colors separated by the horizontal bridge and vertical smoke stacks somehow seem calm and reassuring in this beautiful piece depicting the vitality of Pittsburgh in 1928.
Born in Lithuania, Gorson moved to the United States in 1888 and to Pittsburgh in 1903. Pittsburg's engineering growth, hills, and rivers were an ideal combination of industry and nature for his painting style. Although he was trained as a realist, Gorson's interest in capturing the play of color and light in depicting the relationship between man and machine rather than a photographic reproduction of life suggest the influence of modernism. These nighttime views of the mills became his signature subject."
