Plaster cast of a head in Classical style, acquired probably for studio teaching.
The Classical Head speaks to a tradition of sculptural portraits that can be traced back to the archaic Greek period. Since the fifth century BC, many similar sculptures were produced, which emphasized idealized features over individual likeness. Likeness allowed the viewer to identify the figure as an individual, but it was important to the Greeks that a portrait also evoked virtues that went beyond individuality. The portrait sitter became a symbol for higher human qualities, idealized in order to reflect qualities worthy of admiration and emulation.
