"Open hearth furnaces require heat resisting linings to prevent the molten mass within from consuming the furnace structure. Constant use and high temperatures cause rapid deterioration of the furnace lining which must be repaired continuously, a procedure known as 'making up' the walls. Here workmen are throwing in shovels of dolomite." (D. Grafty, "Pennsylvania as Artists See it: The Gimbel PA Art Collection", 1948)
