J&L steel mill at night in full production with flames and smoke billowing from many stacks of mill buildings.
"The Jones and Laughlin Steel Co., like hundreds of other busy Pittsburgh plants, worked day and night during the war, with flames and smoke not only providing a spectacular sight, but also indicating the prosperity of a community that lives on heavy industry. The sooty smoke from the tall stacks in the river valley rises to besmirch the residential areas on the hills." (D. Grafty, "Pennsylvania as Artists See it: The Gimbel PA Art Collection", 1948)
