"Expect for the German farmer, early agriculturalists of Pennsylvania were a restless, nomadic group. As urban civilization encroached in the East they moved West, to grow potatoes, cereal, hay and livestock in Allegheny County and the Appalachian section. Farms both East and West in the State were cleared by frontiersmen." (D. Grafty, "Pennsylvania as Artists See it: The Gimbel PA Art Collection", 1948)
