Landscape with trees, hills, and vehicles traveling on the PA turnpike (the first American tunnel superhighway completed in 1940).
"This $70,000,000 modern four-lane East-West toll road from Carlisle to Pittsburgh, first American tunnel superhighway, was completed in 1940. It incorporates six miles of tunnels dug from the mountains in 1883 by William H., son of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who dreamed of a railroad that never was built." (D. Grafty, "Pennsylvania as Artists See it: The Gimbel PA Art Collection", 1948)
