Interior steel mill scene with workers dwarfed by huge ladle of molten iron being picked up from blast furnace by an overhead crane.
"Both the dramatic beauty and the danger of steel production are indicated in this study. Workmen seem tiny in contrast to the huge ladle of molten iron from the blast furnace being picked up by an overhead crane which slowly tilts it above the spout. White sparks fall from the liquid iron as the hot metal runs into the open hearth furnace." (D. Grafty, "Pennsylvania as Artists See it: The Gimbel PA Art Collection", 1948)

"While glorifying the steel industry with blasts of bright light from the gargantuan cauldron, this painting presents the hardships that went into steel production. In the background, behind the large crucible of shining liquid metal in a blast furnace, a worker stands staring out into the distance. This man invites the viewer into the painting, and into his soul. One can sense the grief, fear, and fatigue that he faces in his occupation, but also the sense of pride in his work. Much like Millman's other paintings in the exhibition, the red, orange, and yellow tones create an extremely dramatic and evocative work depicting Pittsburgh's industry at its pinnacle."
