Ceramic birdbath with artificial birds, pair of leather sandals and bird seeds spread on the ground. Conceived to accompany Nicholas Lochoff's replica of Giotto's "St Francis Preaching to the birds" in the Frick Fine Arts Building (cloister) at the University of Pittsburgh.
"Drawing upon the existing space of its environment, The Congregants brings new light to Nicholas Lochoff's replication of Giotto's St Francis Preaching to the Birds fresco in Frick Fine Arts' cloister. By installing artificial birds, a birdbath, birdseed, and leather sandals below the fresco, I strive to bring three-dimensional life to a two-dimensional painting and enhance viewers' perspective of the subject of St.Francis of Assisi.
My hope in The Congregants is to remind viewers that St. Francis was an actual person who lived in poverty and communed with nature, unaware of his canonization that occured two years after his death. The Congregants directly engages Giotto's fresco with a breath of freshness and playfulness in which we cheerfully remember the reality of St.Francis' life and work."
