Here we see a depiction of the biblical story of Judith, a common subject in Renaissance art. The broad, decisive marks of this drawing capture the story’s climax in which Judith decapitates Holofernes, preserving the Jewish people from destruction by his Assyrian army and confirming her virtue.
Wall label from the exhibition The Curious Drawings of Doctor Clapp, UAG, October 24–December 6, 2019.
