This sculptural head facing 3/4 left, with alert expression and well-lighted features, indicates the persistence of the Roman portrait type as a source of ideal beauty. The face, seen in full light, reveals the 2nd and 3rd century A.D. Roman portrait characteristics of the drilled-out iris and heavy upper eyelid; the heavy cast shadows under the chin and at the back of the neck show the drawing as also a study in lighting. Although stylistically similar to other sculptural heads in this exhibition, including that attributed to Maratta, the inscription giving the drawing to Mehus is just as studied among the various academics throughout Europe during the 17th century and later.
